On Racial Authenticity

Julian Warner

talk

Racial Authenticity is based upon essentialist notions of race and ethnicity, but it also describes the way in which we claim our subjecthood as identity by merging autobiography, practice, and body. It is a way in which racialized people speak with authority, as a useful tool in progressive struggles against discrimination and exclusion. In this talk, anthropologist/artist Julian Warner will draw from his ethnographic fieldwork on the current state of black cultural workers in Germany, to address this articulation of racist discourse, progressive politics, and neoliberal commodification.

Enjoy a nice samosa after the talk before Ligia Lewis' performance starts.
